Since 1987, SeaWise Marine has built the most reliable boat davit systems in the world. We build them right here in the Pacific Northwest. We know that marine hardware must survive harsh saltwater.
We designed our manual davit system for “minimum effort.” Any boater should be able to launch a tender without hurting their back. These systems are built to last a lifetime. However, you might sometimes feel resistance when turning the crank.
Usually, a stiff handle is an alignment or weight issue, not a broken part. Let’s look at why this happens and get your handle turning smoothly again.
Why is your davit handle sticking?
If your manual davit handle is hard to turn, it is usually caused by one of these three things:
- Too Much Weight: You are lifting more than the 450 lb weight limit (including the boat, motor, fuel, and gear).
- Bad Alignment: The custom mounting brackets are not aligned perfectly. This causes the metal arms to bind as they rotate.
- Cable Issues: The stainless steel winch cable is twisted, frayed, or wrapping over itself on the drum spool.

Understanding the 25:1 Gear Advantage
To fix the problem, you need to know how the system works. Our manual lift uses a 25:1 worm gear reduction.
This is a masterpiece of physics. It means for every 25 times you turn the handle, the winch drum turns exactly one time. It works just like a mountain bike in its lowest gear. You have to turn it more times, but the physical work is very easy.
This gear has a built-in safety feature. It is self-locking. If you let go of the handle, it will not spin backward and drop your boat. However, if your system is out of alignment, this self-locking friction can make the handle feel like it is stuck.
Cause 1: Exceeding the Weight Capacity
The most common reason for a hard-to-turn handle is too much weight. You must calculate the total “wet weight” of your tender. Do not just look at the empty hull weight. You must add the heavy 4-stroke motor, a full tank of gas, the battery, and any gear inside.
| Feature | SeaWise Manual System Specs |
| Max Lifting Capacity | Up to 450 lbs (204 kg) |
| System Weight | Approx. 100 to 115 lbs |
| Recommended Boat Size | 30ft+ Trawlers and Cruisers |
| Material Grade | 316L Electro-Polished Stainless Steel |
The Fix:
If your tender weighs more than 450 lbs, you are pushing the gears too hard. This is very common with heavy center-console RIBs. If your boat is too heavy, you need to upgrade to our Electric Davit System, which easily lifts up to 800 lbs with the push of a button.

Cause 2: Installation Geometry and Brackets
Smooth lifting requires a perfect “arc.” The dinghy must rotate up perfectly. SeaWise systems are not “one-size-fits-all.” We make custom mounting brackets for specific boats like Sea Ray, Ranger Tugs, Meridian, Grand Banks, and Nordic Tugs.
If these brackets are even slightly off-center, the metal will bind. It will physically fight you as you crank.
The Fix:
If an outside shop installed your system years ago, the geometry might be wrong. Sometimes, you just need a modern “support bar upgrade.” This simple part ensures the mechanics pivot smoothly. Call our tech team to verify your setup.
Troubleshooting Checklist: Fix It Step-by-Step
If you are leaning hard into the handle and it is fighting back, stop cranking. Follow this simple engineer’s checklist to find the problem.
- Check the Winch Cable: Look at the stainless steel aircraft cable. Is it bunching up on one side of the spool? Is it crossing over itself? If the cable wraps badly, it changes the gear size and makes it harder to pull. Reel it all the way out and spool it back in neatly.
- Look at the Motor Position: Our patented design keeps the outboard motor vertical. Make sure the motor is turning freely. If the motor hits the transom or the swim platform, it will stop the winch from turning.
- Inspect the Stainless Steel: We use premium 316L stainless steel. It is polished to remove impurities so the arms slide smoothly without friction. Check the moving parts for salt buildup, dirt, or physical damage. Wash it with fresh water.
- Check the Locking Pin: Ensure the safety locking pin is pulled out all the way. If it is only half-pulled, it will rub against the metal and create massive resistance.
- Check Your Steering: Sometimes stiffness is related to the outboard motor itself. If your dinghy steering is locked up, read our guide on how to fix a seized steering cable.

When to Seek Professional Support
A SeaWise manual davit is a serious piece of engineering. Our very first unit, built in 1987, is still working perfectly today.
If you have checked the weight, the cable, and the pins, and the handle is still stiff, please call us. We stand behind our work with a 5-year warranty and lifetime tech support.
When you call SeaWise, you do not talk to an overseas call center. You get real help from our experts in British Columbia. Often, you will speak directly with our President, Derek Brown. We are available 7 days a week from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. PST.
